  • Lyme Disease Risk Reduction: Indicated for the reduction of Borrelia burgdorferi infection as a direct result of killing adult Ixodes scapularis ticks.
  • Ear Mite Treatment: A single dose of Simparica may be administered for the treatment of ear mite infestations. A veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended, as some dogs may require a second treatment.
  • Dogs only: For dogs and puppies 6 months of age and older, weighing at least 1.3 kg / 2.8 lbs.

Simparica Active Ingredients

  • Sarolaner: A member of the isoxazoline class of ectoparasiticides. Inhibits GABA-gated and glutamate-gated chloride channels at the neuromuscular junction of insects and ticks, causing uncontrolled neuronal activity leading to paralysis and death. Sarolaner has significantly greater affinity for invertebrate receptors compared to mammalian receptors.
  • Action Mechanism: Sarolaner is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and distributes systemically. Fleas and ticks are exposed when they attach to the dog and begin feeding. Available in six weight-banded strengths (5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg, and 120 mg), each formulated to deliver a minimum dose of 2 mg/kg body weight.

Simparica Dosage & Administration

  • Dose: One chewable tablet administered orally once monthly, selected by the dog's body weight:
    • 2.6 to 5 kg / 5.7 to 11 lbs: 5 mg tablet
    • 5.1 to 10 kg / 11.2 to 22 lbs: 10 mg tablet
    • 10.1 to 20 kg / 22.2 to 44 lbs: 20 mg tablet
    • 20.1 to 40 kg / 44.2 to 88 lbs: 40 mg tablet
    • 40.1 to 60 kg / 88.2 to 132 lbs: 80 mg tablet
    • Over 60 kg / over 132 lbs: 120 mg tablet
  • Feeding: May be given with or without food. Offer directly by hand or place in food.
  • Minimum age and weight: 6 months of age and older, minimum 1.3 kg / 2.8 lbs.
  • Year-round use: In regions where fleas and ticks are active year-round, monthly treatment without interruption is recommended.
  • Regional note: Due to geographic and climate variations across Canada, the distribution of tick species and abundance of flea and tick infestations is variable and evolving. A comprehensive dosing plan based on regional risk assessment and your pet's travel history is recommended β€” consult your veterinarian.
  • Flea re-infestation: To minimize the likelihood of flea re-infestation, treat all dogs and cats within the household with an approved flea product.
  • Missed dose: Administer Simparica immediately and resume monthly dosing from that date.

Simparica Safety & Side Effects

  • Common adverse reactions (field study, incidence over 2%): Erythema (skin redness) and pruritus (itching). Vomiting and diarrhea have also been reported post-approval.
  • Neurological warning β€” isoxazoline class: Sarolaner has been associated with tremors, ataxia (incoordination), and seizures in dogs, including dogs with no prior history of neurological disease. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurological disorders.
  • Not for use in cats or other species.
  • Breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs: Safe use has not been evaluated. Consult your veterinarian before use.
