Advantage Multi Main Uses
- Heartworm Prevention: Prevents cardiovascular dirofilariasis (heartworm disease) caused by Dirofilaria immitis.
- Broad-Spectrum Parasite Control: Treats and controls intestinal nematode infections including roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis).
- Flea Management: Kills adult fleas and treats flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis). It is often used as a component of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) therapy.
- Mange and Mites: Indicated for the treatment and control of sarcoptic mange (scabies) and as an aid in the treatment of demodicosis (demodectic mange).
- Lungworm: Specifically registered in Canada for the treatment and control of fox lungworm (Crenosoma vulpis).
Advantage Multi Active Ingredients
- Imidacloprid (10%): An insecticide that targets the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the fleaβs nervous system, causing paralysis and death. It remains primarily on the skin's surface.
- Moxidectin (2.5%): A potent macrocyclic lactone that is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. It interferes with chloride channel neurotransmission in parasites, leading to the paralysis and elimination of internal worms and heartworm larvae.
- Mechanism of Action: This "inside-out" protection combines a topical adulticide for fleas with a systemic internal medicine for worms. It kills fleas on contact (no bite required) while maintaining therapeutic blood levels to eliminate internal parasites.
Advantage Multi Dosage & Administration
- Recommended Dosage: The minimum dose is 10 mg/kg imidacloprid and 2.5 mg/kg moxidectin, applied topically once a month.
- Weight Categories (Canada):
- Advantage Multi Green for Small Dogs (up to 4.5 kg): 0.4 mL tube
- Advantage Multi Turquoise/Aqua for Medium Dogs (4.6β9 kg): 1.0 mL tube
- Advantage Multi Red for Large Dogs (9.1β25 kg): 2.5 mL tube
- Advantage Multi Blue for Extra Large Dogs (25.1β45 kg): 4.0 mL tube
- Administration: Part the hair until the skin is visible. For dogs under 20 lbs., apply to one spot between the shoulder blades. For dogs over 20 lbs., apply the contents evenly to 3 or 4 spots along the top of the backline.
- Water Fastness: The product remains effective for heartworm prevention if the dog gets wet 60 minutes after application. However, for flea control, it is recommended to wait at least 4 days before shampooing or heavy swimming.
Advantage Multi Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Transient itching (pruritus), medicinal odor, or a "greasy" appearance/residue at the application site.
- Rare/Serious Side Effects: Lethargy, vomiting, or hyperactivity. If licked, the bitter taste may cause salivation or temporary neurological signs (incoordination/tremors).
- MDR1 Sensitivity: Use with caution in breeds sensitive to avermectins (e.g., Collies, Australian Shepherds) due to the potential for increased sensitivity to moxidectin if ingested.
- Safety Warnings:
- Heartworm Testing: dogs over 6 months should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting Advantage Multi.
- Age/Weight: Use only on puppies at least 7 weeks of age and weighing more than 1 kg (approx. 2.2 lbs).
- Species: Strictly prohibited for use on cats.
