Credelio Plus Main Uses
- Broad-Spectrum Parasite Control: Indicated for the concurrent treatment and prevention of both external and internal parasites in a single monthly dose.
- Flea and Tick Protection: Provides immediate and persistent killing activity against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and ticks (Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus) for one month.
- Heartworm Prevention: Prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis when administered monthly.
- Intestinal Worm Treatment: Treats and controls adult and larval stages of gastrointestinal nematodes, including roundworms (Toxocara canis), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis).
- Mite Control: Effective in the treatment of demodicosis (demodectic mange).
Credelio Plus Active Ingredients
- Lotilaner: An ectoparasiticide from the isoxazoline class. It blocks GABA-gated chloride channels in the nervous systems of fleas and ticks, leading to rapid paralysis and death.
- Milbemycin Oxime: A macrocyclic lactone that targets the nervous system of internal nematodes (worms). It increases the permeability of nerve and muscle membranes to chloride ions, causing death to the parasites.
- Mechanism of Action: This is a systemic treatment. The active ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream. Fleas and ticks are killed after they bite and begin feeding, while internal parasites are eliminated as the medication circulates through the tissues and GI tract.
Credelio Plus Dosage & Administration
- Recommended Dosage: Administered orally once a month at a minimum dose of 20 mg/kg lotilaner and 0.75 mg/kg milbemycin oxime.
- Weight Categories (Canada):
- Credelio Plus Yellow (1.4–2.8 kg): 56.25 mg / 2.11 mg tablet.
- Credelio Plus Pink (2.8–5.5 kg): 112.5 mg / 4.22 mg tablet.
- Credelio Plus Orange (5.5–11.0 kg): 225 mg / 8.44 mg tablet.
- Credelio Plus Green (11.0–22.0 kg): 450 mg / 16.88 mg tablet.
- Credelio Plus Blue (22.0–45.0 kg): 900 mg / 33.75 mg tablet.
- Administration Timing: Must be administered with food or immediately after feeding to ensure maximum absorption and efficacy.
- Adjustments: For dogs over 45 kg, use an appropriate combination of tablets as directed by a veterinarian.
Credelio Plus Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated. Reported uncommonly (1–10 per 1,000) are gastrointestinal signs (diarrhea, vomiting), lethargy, and decreased appetite.
- Neurological Warning: Like other isoxazolines, lotilaner has been associated with neurological adverse reactions such as muscle tremors, ataxia (loss of balance), and seizures, even in dogs without a history of these conditions.
- Heartworm Testing: All dogs > 6 months of age should be tested for existing heartworm infection prior to starting treatment for the first time. Annual testing of all dogs for heartworm should be done.
- MDR1 Sensitivity: While safe for most ivermectin-sensitive breeds (like Collies) at label doses, caution and strict dosing are advised due to the milbemycin oxime component.
- Contraindications: Do not use in puppies under 8 weeks of age or weighing less than 1.4 kg.
