Onsior Tablets Main Uses

  • Osteoarthritis Management: Indicated for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with chronic osteoarthritis in dogs.
  • Soft Tissue Surgery: Used for the treatment of post-operative pain and inflammation associated with soft tissue surgeries.

Onsior Tablets Active Ingredients

  • Robenacoxib: A non-narcotic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the coxib class.
  • Mechanism of Action:
    • COX-2 Selectivity: Specifically inhibits the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, which is responsible for producing the prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation.
    • COX-1 Sparing: At recommended doses, it has minimal effect on the COX-1 enzyme, which protects the gastrointestinal lining and maintains normal kidney blood flow.
  • Formulation: Flavored, non-scored tablets designed for high palatability and voluntary acceptance by most dogs.

Onsior Tablets Dosage & Administration

  • Osteoarthritis Dosage: The recommended dose is 1 mg/kg (range 1–2 mg/kg) administered once daily at the same time each day.
  • Soft Tissue Surgery Dosage: The recommended dose is 2 mg/kg (range 2–4 mg/kg) administered as a single dose prior to surgery. For post-operative care, once-daily treatment may continue for up to two additional days.
  • Weight Constraints: Safe for dogs weighing at least 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) and at least 4 months of age (soft tissue surgery) or 6 months of age (chronic osteoarthritis).
  • Administration:
    • Tablets should not be broken or divided.
    • For maximum efficacy, administer without food or with a small quantity of food.

Onsior Tablets Side Effects & Safety

  • Common Side Effects: Generally well tolerated; however, mild gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, soft stools, or diarrhea may occur.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Contraindications: Do not use in dogs with gastrointestinal ulcers, severe liver disease, or known hypersensitivity to robenacoxib.
    • Drug Interactions: Do not administer concurrently with other NSAIDs (e.g., Metacam, Rimadyl) or corticosteroids (e.g., Prednisone).
    • Monitoring: For long-term osteoarthritis therapy, veterinarians recommend monitoring liver enzymes at the start of treatment (weeks 2, 4, and 8) and every 3–6 months thereafter.
  • Discontinuation: Stop use immediately and contact a veterinarian if the dog develops anorexia (loss of appetite), lethargy, or repeated vomiting.
  • Duration of Use: While surgery protocols are limited to 3 days, use for osteoarthritis can be long-term under strict veterinary supervision and regular blood monitoring.
