Metacam Oral Suspension Main Uses
METACAM Oral Suspension is indicated for the control of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs.
Used for relieving pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis pain (OA), post-operative soreness, and musculoskeletal discomfort.
 
Metacam Oral Suspension Active Ingredients
The active ingredient is meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
The formulation is a yellowish viscous suspension with the odor of honey.
Meloxicam works by inhibiting the cell's production of chemicals that trigger inflammation. It lowers inflammatory pain and swelling associated with osteoarthritis; results in improved mobility and reduced lameness
 
Metacam Oral Suspension Dosage & Administration
Dogs (1.5 mg/mL suspension): Initial loading dose day 1 of 0.2 mg/kg (0.09 mg/lb), followed by once-daily maintenance dose of 0.1 mg/kg (0.045 mg/lb) from day 2 onward; use the calibrated dosing syringe, rounding weight down to the nearest increment to avoid overdosing.
Administration: Shake well; may be mixed with food or given directly by mouth; give once daily at approximately the same time; ensure accurate measurement, especially for small dogs; veterinarians may adjust duration based on response, using the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.
 
Metacam Oral Suspension Side Effects & Safety
Do not use in dogs less than 6 weeks of age.
Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals.
Do not use in dogs suffering from gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and haemorrhage, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function, and haemorrhagic disorders.
Avoid use in any dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animal, as there is a potential risk of renal toxicity.
Common side effects include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, faecal occult blood, lethargy and renal failure, which have occasionally been reported.
Use caution with other nephrotoxic drugs, anticoagulants, or highly protein-bound medications; consult a veterinarian for concurrent therapy plans.
This product for dogs should not be used in cats as it is not suitable for use in this species. In cats, Metacam 0.5 mg/ml oral suspension for cats should be used.
