Thyro-Tab Main Uses

  • Treatment of Hypothyroidism: Primarily used as replacement therapy for diminished thyroid function (hypothyroidism) in dogs.
  • Health Conditions Supported: Addresses clinical signs associated with low thyroid levels, including lethargy, weight gain, exercise intolerance, bilateral hair loss (alopecia), dry/dull coat, and skin thickening.

Thyro-Tab Active Ingredients

  • Levothyroxine Sodium (synthetic crystalline levothyroxine sodium)
  • Mechanism: It acts as a synthetic version of the naturally occurring T4 hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Once ingested and absorbed, levothyroxine is converted into T3 (triiodothyronine), the active form of the hormone. This regulates the metabolic rate of nearly all tissues, supporting brain, heart, muscle, and nerve function.

Thyro-Tab Dosage & Administration

  • The initial recommended daily dosage is typically 0.1 mg per 4.5 kg (10 lbs) of body weight in single or divided doses.
  • Can be given orally or placed in the food.
  • Dosages are highly individualized. Veterinarians typically perform blood tests every 4 weeks initially to titrate the dose until a stable maintenance level is reached.

Thyro-Tab Side Effects & Safety

  • Side Effects: Most adverse effects are related to excessive dosing (iatrogenic hyperthyroidism), which can cause increased thirst/urination, panting, hyperactivity, weight loss, and an increased heart rate.
  • Rare Reactions: Potential for skin rashes or gastrointestinal upset (vomiting/diarrhea), though these are uncommon at therapeutic doses.
  • Contraindications: Should not be used in pets with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease), acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), or thyrotoxicosis. Use is contraindicated or should be undertaken with caution in dogs with normal thyroid function (euthyroid dogs), primary hypertension, or during pregnancy, unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.
  • Precautions: Use in breeding or pregnant dogs has not been fully evaluated. In some cases, administration during pregnancy may affect normal thyroid development in unborn puppies. Overdosage may result in signs of thyrotoxicosis, including increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, reduced heat tolerance, and behavioral changes. Certain tablet strengths contain FD&C Yellow #5 (tartrazine), which has been associated with allergic-type reactions in susceptible individuals.
  • Duration of Use: Hypothyroidism is generally a lifelong condition; therefore, this medication is typically required for the remainder of the pet's life.
