Vetoryl Main Uses
- Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s Disease): Used specifically to treat both Pituitary-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) and Adrenal-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism (ADH) in dogs.
- Symptom Management: Helps resolve clinical signs such as excessive drinking (polydipsia), excessive urination (polyuria), ravenous appetite (polyphagia), "pot-belly" appearance, and hair loss/skin issues.
Vetoryl Active Ingredients
- Active Ingredient: Trilostane.
- Mechanism: Trilostane is a synthetic steroid analogue that acts as a competitive enzyme inhibitor. It selectively inhibits the 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme in the adrenal cortex. By blocking this enzyme, it prevents the conversion of pregnenolone to progesterone, thereby reducing the production of cortisol, aldosterone, and certain sex hormones.
Vetoryl Dosage & Administration
- Starting Dosage: The standard starting dose is 2.2 to 6.7 mg/kg (1–3 mg/lb) once daily.
- Administration: Must be administered orally with food to enhance absorption and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset.
- Weight & Size: Available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, and 120 mg capsules to allow for precise dosing based on the dog’s weight.
- Monitoring: Dosage adjustments are common and based on a mandatory ACTH stimulation test and blood chemistry (electrolytes) typically performed 10–14 days after starting or changing a dose.
Vetoryl Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and a temporary decrease in appetite.
- Contraindications:
- Do not use in dogs with primary liver (hepatic) disease or renal insufficiency (kidney failure).
- Do not use in pregnant or nursing dogs, or those intended for breeding.
- Drug Interactions: Use with caution with ACE inhibitors (e.g., enalapril) or potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone), as these can cause dangerously high potassium levels.
- Handling Warning: Pregnant women or those trying to conceive should not handle the capsules, as trilostane can cause birth defects or pregnancy loss.
