Apoquel Main Uses:

  • Apoquel are mainly used to treat itching (pruritus) caused by allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis in dogs aged 12 months and older.

  • Apoquel provides fast and effective relief for allergy-related skin inflammation, with results typically seen within 4 to 48 hours of administration.

  • Apoquel works comparably to steroid medications, but it has fewer and milder side effects than traditional steroids.

  • Clinical studies indicate 60% of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis cases are controllable on once-daily dosing.

Apoquel Active ingredient:

  • Oclacitinib maleate: a Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitor, primarily targeting JAK-1 and JAK-3 signaling pathways to block inflammatory cytokines that cause itch and inflammation (including IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-13, and IL-31).

  • By blocking these cytokines, Apoquel interrupts the cycle of itching, scratching, and further skin damage, allowing the skin to heal.

Apoquel Dosage & Administration

  • Apoquel tablets come in 3 strengths to suit different dog weights:

    • 3.6 mg

    • 5.4 mg

    • 16 mg

  • Recommended dosage: 0.4–0.6 mg per kg of body weight, typically prescribed twice daily for the first 14 days, then once daily for maintenance.

  • Tablets can be given with or without food; some dogs may tolerate them better with food.

  • Dosage is strictly based on weight and age and veterinarians adjust dose for long-term use to minimize immune suppression.

  • Always use as directed by a veterinarian. Do not give extra doses if a dose is missed—resume as scheduled.

Apoquel Safety & Side Effects

  • Common side effects include: vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, lethargy, skin or ear infections, and rarely, bone marrow suppression detected on bloodwork.

  • Stop the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice: Signs of a infection such as skin swelling, oozing, bleeding sores, frequent or painful urination, lack of energy, coughing, or poor appetite; New growths or an enlargement of existing skin masses.

  • Not recommended for dogs under 12 months due to risk of infections.

  • Apoquel is safe for long-term use in most dogs with regular veterinary monitoring.
