Mometamax Main Uses
- Treatment of Otitis Externa: Indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic outer ear infections in dogs.
- Broad-Spectrum Control: Specifically targets infections caused by susceptible strains of yeast (Malassezia pachydermatis) and bacteria, including Pseudomonas spp., Staphylococci, Enterococcus faecalis, and Proteus mirabilis.
- Inflammation Reduction: Used to reduce the pain, redness, and swelling of the ear canal tissue associated with these infections.
Mometamax Active Ingredients
- Gentamicin Sulfate (3 mg/g): An aminoglycoside antibiotic that eliminates a wide range of bacteria by inhibiting their protein synthesis.
- Mometasone Furoate Monohydrate (1 mg/g): A potent synthetic corticosteroid that provides anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic (anti-itch) action to soothe the ear canal.
- Clotrimazole (10 mg/g): A broad-spectrum antifungal agent that effectively treats yeast infections, which are a primary cause of canine ear discomfort.
Mometamax Dosage & Administration
- Recommended Dosage (Dogs):
- Dogs < 15 kg (approx. 30 lbs): Instill 4 drops from the 7.5 g, 15 g or 30 g bottle (2 drops from the 215 g bottle) once daily.
- Dogs ≥ 15 kg (approx. 30 lbs): Instill 8 drops from the 7.5 g, 15 g or 30 g bottle (4 drops from the 215 g bottle) once daily
- Administration:
- The ear canal should be cleaned and dried before application to ensure the medication contacts the skin.
- Shake the bottle well before each use.
- After applying drops, gently massage the base of the ear to ensure the suspension is distributed throughout the canal.
- Duration: Typically prescribed for 7 consecutive days. Your veterinarian may adjust this based on clinical response or follow-up ear cytology.
- Species Note: This product is officially approved for dogs.
Mometamax Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Temporary redness or mild irritation at the site of application.
- Rare/Serious Side Effects: Use of this product has been associated with partial hearing loss or deafness in some dogs (e.g. geriatric). On rare occasions, especially in older dogs, permanent hearing losses or deficits were reported.
- Contraindications: Do not use in dogs with a ruptured eardrum (tympanic membrane).
- Safety Warnings:
- For otic use in dogs only. Avoid contact with eyes.
- The safe use of MOMETAMAX otic suspension has not been evaluated in breeding dogs or in pregnant or lactating bitches.
- Safe Duration: Do not exceed the 7-day treatment window unless directed by a veterinarian, as prolonged use of steroids can delay wound healing.
- Storage: Store at room temperature (15°-30°C). Do not use the opened product after 28 days.
