PROIN Main Uses

  • Urinary Incontinence Control: Specifically indicated for the control of urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter hypotonus (weakening of the muscles that hold the bladder closed) in dogs.

PROIN Active Ingredients

  • Phenylpropanolamine Hydrochloride (PPA): A sympathomimetic amine.
  • Mechanism of Action: It works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the urethra. This increases the "tone" or tightness of the urethral sphincter, creating a stronger seal to prevent urine from leaking out of the bladder.

PROIN Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended Dosage: The standard total daily dose is 2 mg/kg of body weight twice daily.
  • Forms: Available in liver-flavored, scored chewable tablets (25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg) to allow for precise dosing in half-tablet increments.
  • Administration Timing: Can be given with or without food. If the dog experiences nighttime accidents, veterinarians may suggest giving a dose shortly before bedtime.

PROIN Side Effects & Safety

  • Common Side Effects: Vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst (polydipsia), restlessness, irritability, high blood pressure and a slight increase in heart rate.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rare but severe reactions include seizures, stroke-like symptoms, or collapse.
  • Contraindications & Warnings:
    • Do not use in dogs with pre-existing high blood pressure (hypertension).
    • Use with caution in dogs with heart disease, kidney insufficiency, liver disease, diabetes, or glaucoma.
    • Do not use in pregnant or lactating dogs.
  • Safe Duration: Often used as a lifelong management tool, but requires regular veterinary monitoring of blood pressure and heart health.
