Drontal Main Uses
Broad-Spectrum Internal Parasite Control: Indicated for the treatment and removal of the most common feline intestinal parasites, specifically tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms.
Species Targeted: Effectively treats Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina (roundworms), Ancylostoma tubaeforme and Ancylostoma braziliense (hookworms), and Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis (tapeworms).
 
Drontal Active Ingredients
Praziquantel: A pyrazine-isoquinoline derivative that targets tapeworms. It works by inducing severe damage to the parasite's integument (skin), causing rapid contraction and spastic paralysis. This allows the host's immune system or digestive enzymes to destroy the worm.
Pyrantel Pamoate: A neuromuscular blocking agent that targets roundworms and hookworms. It acts as a cholinergic agonist, overstimulating the parasite's nicotinic receptors and causing sudden paralysis. The worms lose their attachment to the intestinal wall and are passed out in the stool.
Synergistic Action: The two ingredients work together to ensure a comprehensive effect on multiple parasite life stages within the intestinal tract.
 
Drontal Dosage & Administration
Dosage Range: Dosing is strictly weight-dependent.
1 kg: 1/2 tablet
2 kg to 3 kg: 1 tablet
4 kg to 5 kg: 1.5 tablets
6 kg to 7 kg: 2 tablets
8 kg to 9 kg: 2.5 tablets
Administration: Administered as a single oral dose. Tablets are scored for easy splitting.
Feeding: Tablets may be given directly by mouth or offered in a small amount of food. Do not withhold food from the cat prior to or after treatment.
 
Drontal Side Effects & Safety
Common Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated. Occasional side effects include salivation (drooling), vomiting, or loose stools.
Rare Effects: In extremely rare cases, transient incoordination (ataxia) or lethargy may occur but typically resolves within 24 hours.
