Semintra Main Uses
Reduction of Proteinuria: Specifically indicated for the reduction of proteinuria (excess protein in the urine) associated with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in cats.
CKD Progression Support: Helps slow the progression of kidney disease by reducing the workload and pressure within the renal filtering units (nephrons).
 
Semintra Active Ingredients
Telmisartan (4 mg/mL): A non-peptide angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist, commonly known as an Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (ARB).
Mechanism of Action: Telmisartan selectively binds to the AT1 receptors, displacing angiotensin II (a potent vasoconstrictor). This causes blood vessels to dilate, which lowers blood pressure and reduces the pressure inside the kidneys' filters, thereby decreasing the amount of protein leaked into the urine.
Selective Action: Unlike older medications, it blocks the "bad" effects of AT1 (vasoconstriction) while maintaining the "good" effects of AT2 receptors (vasodilation).
 
Semintra Dosage & Administration
Recommended Dosage: The standard dose for proteinuria is 1 mg/kg (0.25 mL/kg) of body weight, administered once daily.
Administration: The solution is administered orally using the provided calibrated syringe. It can be given directly into the mouth or mixed with a small amount of food.
Timing: It is highly lipophilic and rapidly absorbed; food consumption does not significantly affect its absorption.
Handling & Storage: Should not be mixed with other medicinal products in the same syringe. Store from 5 - 30°C. Upon opening, use within 6 months.
 
Semintra Side Effects & Safety
Common Side Effects: Mild and transient gastrointestinal signs are occasionally reported, including vomiting, diarrhea, soft stools, or regurgitation.
Safety Warnings:
Pregnancy/Nursing: Do not use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats as it may cause fetal morbidity or death.
Blood Pressure: May cause transient hypotension (low blood pressure). If the cat appears weak or collapses, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Blood Parameters: A slight decrease in red blood cell count may occur; monitoring is recommended during long-term therapy.
Liver Enzymes: Rare elevations in liver enzymes have been reported and typically resolve after discontinuation.
Human Safety: Pregnant women should take special care to avoid accidental oral exposure, as substances acting on the RAAS may affect the unborn child during pregnancy in humans.
