Cerenia Main Uses
- Prevention and treatment of acute vomiting caused by various conditions (e.g., gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, some infections like parvovirus, or pancreatitis).
- Prevention of vomiting associated with motion sickness.
Cerenia Active Ingredients
- Maropitant Citrate: It functions as a potent and selective neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist.
- How the product works:
- Vomiting is triggered by the binding of a key neurotransmitter called Substance P to neurokinin-1 receptors in the "vomiting center" (emetic center) of the brain.
- Maropitant works by blocking these neurokinin-1 receptors in the central nervous system (CNS).
- By blocking this crucial signal, maropitant stops both peripheral (from the gut/body) and central (from the brain/vestibular system, as in motion sickness) stimuli from triggering the vomiting reflex, providing broad and effective antiemetic action.
Cerenia Dosage & Administration
- Treatment of Acute Vomiting: A minimum of 2 mg/kg body weight orally once daily.
- Prevention of Vomiting due to Motion Sickness: A minimum of 8mg/kg body weight orally once daily.

- Acute Vomiting: Typically administered once daily. May be given with or without food.
- Motion Sickness: Administer a minimum of two hours prior to travel and dogs should be fed 1 hours before treatment with Cerenia tablets to mitigate side effect of vomiting
- Age:
- Acute Vomiting: For dogs >10 weeks old
- Motion Sickness: For dogs > 4 months old.

Cerenia Side Effects & Safety

- Common (especially at the higher motion sickness dose): Vomiting/retching, hypersalivation (excessive drooling), lethargy, depression
- Less Common: Diarrhea, anorexia (decreased appetite), trembling/muscle tremors, ataxia (uncoordinated walking).
- Safety warnings and contraindications:
- Cerenia is contraindicated in dogs suspected of having a gastrointestinal obstruction (blockage) or toxin ingestion. The underlying cause of vomiting must be addressed first.
- Use with caution in dogs with heart disease or hepatic dysfunction.
- Recommended safe duration of use:
- Acute Vomiting: Up to 5 consecutive days for young dogs (2-7 months of age). For dogs >7 months old, it may be administered once daily until resolution, but a veterinarian should re-evaluate the patient if vomiting persists.
