PancreaKare Powder Main Uses
- Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI): The primary use is as replacement therapy for dogs and cats whose pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes.
- Maldigestion Syndrome: Supports pets struggling to break down and absorb nutrients from their diet due to pancreatic disease.
- Weight Management: Helps improve nutrient absorption, which may support weight gain in pets with EPI.
PancreaKare Powder Active Ingredients
- Pancrelipase (Porcine origin): A concentrate of pancreatic enzymes derived from hogs, containing standardized amounts of:
- Lipase: Breaks down fats into monoglycerides and fatty acids.
- Protease: Breaks down proteins into peptides and amino acids.
- Amylase: Breaks down starches into dextrins and short-chain sugars.
- Mechanism of Action: When mixed with food, these enzymes act locally in the digestive tract to perform the chemical digestion that the pet's own pancreas is failing to do. It is not absorbed into the bloodstream but works entirely within the gut.
PancreaKare Powder Dosage & Administration
- Standard Dosage (per meal):
- Dogs: 2.8 g to 4.2 g (approximately 1 to 1.5 teaspoons) mixed with each meal.
- Cats: 1.4 g to 2.1 g (approximately 0.5 to 0.75 teaspoons) mixed with each meal.
- Pre-Incubation Requirement: The powder must be added to moistened food (canned or water-added dry food) and mixed thoroughly to bring the enzymes into close contact with the food. It should then sit at room temperature for 20 minutes before feeding to allow the enzymes to begin breaking down the food.
- Frequency: Must be administered with every meal the pet consumes.
- Adjustments: Dosage is dependent on degree of pancreatic insufficiency. Consult your veterinarian for frequency of meals and adjustment of dosage.
PancreaKare Powder Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or gas, especially if the dose is too high.
- Localized Irritation: If the powder is not well-mixed, it can cause mouth or esophageal ulcers.
- Safety Warnings:
- Inhalation Hazard: Owners should avoid inhaling the powder, as it can irritate the lungs and may trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals.
- Skin Contact: Can cause irritation or dermatitis upon contact with skin; wash hands immediately after handling.
- Pork Allergy: Do not use in pets with a known allergy to pork.
- Drug Interactions: Antacids (calcium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide) may decrease the efficacy of the enzymes.
