Epakitin Main Uses
- Nutritional support for healthy kidney function in dogs and cats.
- Used as a complementary therapy, often alongside a low-phosphorus diet, for pets with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
- Helps manage hyperphosphatemia (elevated serum phosphorus levels) by reducing the absorption of phosphorus from the diet in the gastrointestinal tract.
Epakitin Active Ingredients
- Chitosan (80 mg per gram): A natural polysaccharide derived from the shells of crustaceans (shrimp and crab). It is the primary phosphate binder and also helps bind and may help reduce the absorption of certain uremic toxins.
- Calcium Carbonate (100 mg per gram): An additional phosphorus binder that neutralizes phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, further helping to reduce serum phosphorus levels.
- Non-medicinal ingredients: Lactose and Hydrolyzed Soy Protein.
Epakitin Dosage & Administration
- Dogs and Cats only.
- 1 gram (g) of Epakitin per 5 kg of body weight.
- One level spoonful (provided in the jar) generally contains 1 gram of Epakitin.
- Administration timing (with/without food, frequency):
- Administer orally, twice daily (morning and evening), mixed with a meal.
- The powder is designed to be highly palatable and can be mixed with regular or prescription renal diets.
- Ensure the animal always has access to fresh drinking water.
Epakitin Side Effects & Safety
- It is generally considered well-tolerated.
- Epakitin contains calcium carbonate, so cats/dogs prone to hypercalcemia should be monitored.
- Should not be used as a substitute for dietary phosphorous restriction (prescription renal diet remains cornerstone therapy).
- Administration can be long-term or lifelong. Use should be managed by a veterinarian, particularly if the pet is on other medications or supplements for kidney disease or calcium/phosphorus regulation.
- Store between 15°C and 25°C. Protect from humidity.
- Keep out of reach of children.
