AlphaTrak 3 Key Features
- Species-Calibrated for Dogs, Cats & Horses: Human blood glucose meters and test strips are not accurate for pet blood, as glucose is distributed differently in animal blood. AlphaTrak 3 strips are specifically calibrated for dogs, cats, and horses to deliver reliable results.
- Essential for Diabetic Pet Management: Recommended by veterinarians for at-home blood glucose monitoring in cats and dogs diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Regular testing allows pet owners to track glucose trends and share data with their veterinarian for insulin dose adjustments.
- Fast and Accurate Results: Requires only a 0.3 µL blood sample and delivers results in as little as 5 seconds. Detects a blood glucose range of 1.1 to 41.7 mmol/L, covering the full clinically relevant range for diabetic cats and dogs.
- App Integration: Compatible with the AlphaTrak Mobile App (iOS and Android) for automatic Bluetooth syncing, glucose trend graphing, and direct sharing with your veterinarian.
- Exclusive Compatibility: Compatible only with the AlphaTrak 3 Blood Glucose Meter. Not compatible with AlphaTrak 2 or any other brand of glucose meter.
AlphaTrak 3 How It Works
- Species code setup: Each new vial of test strips includes a code strip used once to set the species lot code on the meter. Keep the code strip in your carrying case after use.
- Species switching: Switch between cat and dog modes by inserting a strip, then pressing and holding the "c" and "m" buttons simultaneously until the correct species icon appears. No code strip needed for switching between species.
- Blood sample collection sites:
- Cats: inner pinna (marginal ear vein) or paw pad
- Dogs: paw pad, inner or outer lip, leg callus, or marginal ear vein
- Optional: a thin layer of petroleum jelly may be applied to the test site prior to lancing. This can help the blood form a droplet without getting into the hair.
- Testing steps:
- Insert a new test strip into the meter, which powers on automatically
- Confirm the correct species icon is displayed
- Lance the test site and allow a small blood droplet to form
- Touch the tip of the test strip to the droplet; the strip wicks the sample automatically
- Read the result on screen within 5 seconds
- Control solution test: AlphaTrak 3 Control Solution is a red liquid containing a fixed amount of glucose. It is used to: is used to:
- Practice testing without using animal blood
- Confirm that the meter and test strips are working together properly
- Verify results when you are unsure of a blood glucose test result
AlphaTrak 3 Dosage & Administration
- Testing frequency: Your veterinarian will advise how often to test based on your pet's insulin type, current regulation status, and any recent dose changes.
- Spot checks: Single readings taken at specific times (before insulin injection or at the expected glucose nadir) to monitor day-to-day stability.
- Tip for better blood flow: Warm the test site gently by rubbing or applying a warm cloth before lancing to improve blood flow and ensure an adequate sample. If using a wet cloth, place the cloth inside a plastic bag to avoid diluting the blood sample.
AlphaTrak 3 Safety & Side Effects
- For animal use only. Not intended for use in humans.
- Compatibility warning: Use only AlphaTrak 3 test strips and AlphaTrak 3 control solution with the AlphaTrak 3 meter. Using other brands or previous AlphaTrak versions may produce inaccurate results affecting insulin dosing decisions.
- Expired strips: Always check the expiry date printed on the vial before use. Expired strips cannot guarantee accurate readings.
- Insufficient blood sample: Too little blood may cause an error or inaccurate result. Ensure an adequate droplet forms before applying to the strip.
- Single-use only: Each strip is for one test only. Do not reuse strips. Keep the vial tightly capped and stored away from heat, humidity, and direct light.
- Validated species only: AlphaTrak 3 has validated species codes for dogs, cats, and horses only. Consult your veterinarian for other species requiring glucose monitoring.
- Lancets: Use lancets only once and dispose of in a sharps container to prevent infection or injury.
