Atopica for Cats Main Uses

  • It is indicated for the control of feline allergic dermatitis (hypersensitivity dermatitis) in cats at least 6 months of age and weighing at least 1.4 kg (3 lbs).
  • Allergic dermatitis manifestations include excoriations (scratches/lesions, especially on the face and neck), miliary dermatitis (crusty papules), eosinophilic plaques, and self-induced alopecia (hair loss).

Atopica for Cats Active Ingredients

  • Cyclosporine (also known as Ciclosporin), an immunosuppressant.
    • A selective immune-modulating agent and a calcineurin inhibitor.
    • It works by acting specifically and reversibly on T-lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell involved in the immune response).
    • It primarily suppresses the activation of T-cells and inhibits the production of inflammatory chemical signals, such as Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and other T-cell derived cytokines.
    • By blunting this overactive immune response, it reduces the inflammation and pruritus (itching) associated with allergic dermatitis.

Atopica for Cats Dosage & Administration

  • The initial dose is 7 mg/kg of body weight (0.07 mL of oral solution per kg) administered once daily. The dose may be tapered (decreased in frequency) to every other day and then twice weekly to maintain the desired therapeutic effect.
  • It should be given as a single daily dose for a minimum of 4 weeks, or until a satisfactory clinical improvement is observed (typically within 4 to 8 weeks).
  • It can be administered directly on a small amount of food or orally just after feeding. Administration should be on a consistent schedule concerning meals and time of day.
  • The cat must be at least 6 months of age and weigh at least 1.4 kg (3 lbs).

Atopica for Cats Side Effects & Safety

  • Common side effects, which are often mild and self-limiting, include: Vomiting, decreased appetite (anorexia), soft stools/diarrhea, and weight loss. These often occur most frequently during the initial daily dosing period.
  • Weight loss should be monitored, as persistent, progressive weight loss can, in rare cases, lead to a serious liver condition called hepatic lipidosis.
  • Less common side effects include lethargy, behavioral changes, and gingival hyperplasia (gum tissue overgrowth).
  • Safety warnings and contraindications:
    • Contraindicated in cats with known hypersensitivity to cyclosporine or excipients, or those with a history of malignant disorders (cancer) or progressive malignant disorders.
    • Do not use in cats infected with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Cats should be tested for these prior to starting treatment.
    • Use with caution in cats with kidney disease or diabetes mellitus.
