Clavaseptin Main Uses
- Periodontal Infections (Dogs): Specifically indicated for the treatment or adjunctive treatment of dental and gum infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Skin Infections (Cats): Used to treat various skin infections, including abscesses and cellulitis, caused by bacteria such as Pasteurella spp. and Streptococcus spp.
Clavaseptin Active Ingredients
- Amoxicillin (as Trihydrate): A broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall.
- Clavulanic Acid (as Potassium Salt): A beta-lactamase inhibitor. While it has little antibiotic activity on its own, it protects the amoxicillin from being destroyed by certain bacterial enzymes (beta-lactamases).
- Mechanism of Action: The combination allows amoxicillin to overcome bacterial resistance, effectively "unlocking" the bacteria so the antibiotic can destroy it.
Clavaseptin Dosage & Administration
- Standard Dosage: The recommended dose of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid is 12.5 mg/kg of body weight, administered twice daily.
- Weight-Based Tablet Strengths (Canada): Available in 50 mg, 62.5 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg, and 750 mg strengths to accommodate different sizes.
- Administration: Can be given with or without food. Giving with a small meal may reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal upset.
- Duration: Typically prescribed for 7 to 14 days. Duration varies depending on infection type and veterinary direction.
Clavaseptin Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Gastrointestinal issues including vomiting, diarrhea, or loose stools. These are often mild and resolve once the medication is finished.
- Allergic Reactions: Rarely, pets may experience hypersensitivity (hives, rash, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing). If these occur, stop the medication and contact a veterinarian immediately.
- Safety Warnings:
- Penicillin Allergy: Do not use in animals with a known allergy to penicillins or cephalosporins.
- Pregnancy/Nursing: Safety has not been fully established for breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals; use only if the benefits outweigh the risks as determined by a vet.
