Optimmune Eye Ointment Main Uses
- Management of Chronic KCS: Indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), commonly known as "dry eye," by restoring natural tear production.
- Treatment of Chronic Superficial Keratitis (CSK): Effectively manages CSK (or Pannus), an inflammatory condition of the cornea often exacerbated by UV light.
Optimmune Eye Ointment Active Ingredients
- Cyclosporine A (0.2% w/w): A potent immunosuppressive agent (cyclic oligopeptide) that acts as a local immunomodulator.
- Mechanism of Action:
- Anti-inflammatory: Inhibits the production of cytokines that up-regulate T-helper cell activity, thereby stopping the autoimmune destruction of the tear-producing glands.
- Lacrimomimetic: Directly stimulates the lacrimal acinar epithelium to increase the flow of natural tears.
- Base Components: Formulated in a sterile, preservative-free base of Petrolatum, Corn Oil, and Lanolin Alcohol to provide additional lubrication and high lipophilicity for corneal absorption.
Optimmune Eye Ointment Dosage & Administration
- Standard Dosage: Apply a 1/4 inch (approx. 0.6 cm) strip of ointment to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours.
- Administration Site: The ointment may be placed directly onto the cornea or into the lower conjunctival sac.
- Preparation: Any excessive discharge or debris should be removed using a non-irritating ocular cleansing solution prior to application.
- Multi-Medication Timing: If using other eye medications, wait 5 to 10 minutes between products. Always administer liquid eye drops before applying Optimmune ointment.
Optimmune Eye Ointment Side Effects & Safety
- Common Side Effects: Rare instances of slight local irritation, such as redness (hyperemia), eyelid spasms (blepharospasm), or mild discomfort during the first few days of use.
- Rare Reactions: Inflammation or swelling of the eyelid skin and localized hair loss (alopecia) around the eye, often caused by overflow of excess ointment.
- Safety Warnings:
- Contraindications: Do not use in eyes with suspected viral or fungal infections, as immunosuppression may worsen these conditions.
- Breeding Safety: Safety has not been established in puppies, pregnant bitches, or dogs used for breeding.
- Human Safety: Cyclosporine is a potent drug; avoid contact with skin. Wear gloves or wash hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after application.
- Duration of Use: Generally requires lifelong administration. Abruptly stopping treatment often leads to a rapid relapse of clinical signs.
