JAA K2 Potassium Gluconate Main Uses
- Treat or prevent low levels of potassium in the blood, a condition known as hypokalemia, in cats and dogs.
- Functions as an Electrolyte replenisher and is used for Potassium replacement therapy.
- Can be used for the treatment of digitalis toxicity.
- Potassium is a crucial electrolyte that helps maintain proper function of the kidneys, heart, muscles, and nervous system.
- Symptoms of hypokalemia often include muscle weakness (especially in the hind legs), fatigue, a stiff neck or inability to hold the head up (cervical ventroflexion), and excessive thirst and urination (polydipsia and polyuria).
JAA K2 Potassium Gluconate Active Ingredients
Each tablet contains:
- Potassium Gluconate (468 mg): This is a potassium salt of gluconic acid. It serves as a source of elemental potassium, an essential electrolyte.
- Elemental Potassium (78 mg or 2 mEq): Potassium is critical for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, transmitting nerve signals, and facilitating muscle contractions, including the heart muscle.
- Non Active Ingredients: Povidone, Microcristalline cellulose, Magnesium stearate , croscarmellose sodium,di calcium phosphate.
JAA K2 Potassium Gluconate Dosage & Administration
- For potassium gluconate tablets containing 2 mEq (approximately 468 mg of Potassium Gluconate) per tablet, a suggested starting dose for adult cats and dogs is 1 tablet per 10 lb (4.5 kg) of body weight, twice daily.
- The dosage is adjusted by a licensed veterinarian based on the patient's specific body weight, individual needs and periodic serum potassium measurements.
- Oral potassium supplements are best administered with food to help prevent stomach upset and gastrointestinal irritation.
JAA K2 Potassium Gluconate Side Effects & Safety
- Common: Gastrointestinal irritation, which may manifest as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, gas, or diarrhea. This can often be minimized by administering the supplement with food.
- Rare: High potassium level (hyperkalemia) is a serious risk of overdose. Symptoms include severe muscle weakness, twitching, irritability, confusion, and cardiac conduction disturbances or irregular heartbeats.
- The product is Chloride free, which makes it more suitable for high blood pressure and heart condition patients compared to chloride-containing potassium supplements, though veterinary clearance is still essential.
- Contraindications: Potassium salts should not be used in animals with Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels).
- Cautions:
- Severe renal impairment or failure (inability to excrete potassium, leading to accumulation).
- Extensive tissue damage.
- Untreated hypoadrenocorticism
- Acute dehydration.
- Decreased gastrointestinal motility (can increase the risk of local irritation/ulcers).
- Drug Interactions: Use with caution when combined with certain medications that can also increase potassium levels, such as: Potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDs, and Digoxin.
